IRON INFUSIONS
Intravenous Iron Therapy is now being offered at Juniper Naturopathic Clinic. Iron deficiency occurs when your body doesn’t have enough iron and can lead to a condition called iron deficiency anemia. Common symptoms include fatigue, pallor, weakness, headache, dizziness, low blood pressure, and breathlessness. Individuals with blood loss, lack of iron in the diet, the inability to properly absorb iron, pregnancy, and medications or foods that block iron absorption may require an IV iron infusion to obtain optimal levels. Juniper Clinic provides a safe, and relaxing environment to perform your infusion under the care of our Nurse Practitioner.
WHAT IS IT?
This treatment is for patients who suffer from iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia which can be diagnoses by a routine blood test. IV iron infusions are recommended when oral iron supplementation fails to adequately restore iron and hemoglobin levels in the blood. The intravenous method is a fast and effective way of delivering iron throughout the body, and restores iron and ferritin levels in the body rapidly with little to no side effects or downtime.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Patients who have low ferritin on recent bloodwork and patients who have done a consult with our Nurse Practitioner to ensure they are eligible for an IV iron prescription.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
After completing pre-infusion bloodwork you may schedule a consultation with Lisa Barter, NP to go over your results and discuss the benefits of an iron infusion. Once you are provided a prescription, our staff will arrange for your prescription to be delivered to the clinic. You will be contacted to set up an infusion appointment once we have your iron.
On the day of your infusion, come to the clinic having taken regular medications, have something to eat and drink prior to your infusion and wear loose fitting clothing. The infusion takes roughly 60-90 minutes and you will be asked to stay 30 minutes post infusion to monitor for any delayed reaction. After you leave the clinic, try to rest the remainder of the day. Flu-like symptoms can develope over 24-48 hours. It is important to drink plenty of water and allow for 2-3 weeks for the iron to absorb. You will complete follow-up bloodwork in 6 weeks time.
